Fort, on the second floor, is one of four new locations across the country.|*||*|On June 1, Americans will be required to have passports or similar documents when returning to the United States by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda.|*||*|U.S. State Department officials say the new office will enable citizens to get their documents within two weeks of their expected travel date.|*||*|Previously, the closest passport agency was in Chicago.|*||*|"We wanted to make sure to include passport agencies close to the northern and southern border," said Britany Williams, acting director of the Detroit agency.|*||*|Hussein Bazoun of Dearborn Heights was at a Dearborn post office Friday filing applications for new passports ahead of his family's trip to Lebanon in the summer. He said having a facility in-state would help Michiganians who don't have the time to wait for their passports or go to Chicago.|*||*|"I want to make sure everything is ready now, I don't want to worry when it's too late," Bazoun said. In October, plans for an enhanced driver's license were approved, providing Michigan residents who are U.S. citizens a cheaper alternative to a passport.
